Golfing Magazine: “The Best Logos in Golf” Ranks Golf’s Iconic Logos

Sean Fitzsimmons, writing for Golfing Magazine, the northeast’s digital golf publication, opens his coverage with a question: courses, players, and even inventions have all been ranked, so why not logos? He introduces The Best Logos in Golf, a four-color, 256-page volume from Back9 Press written by George Peper, editor at large for LINKS Magazine, former editor of GOLF Magazine, and author of 20 books. Fitzsimmons presents it as the first comprehensive ranking of iconic golf club emblems, blending history, tradition, and design.
Fitzsimmons highlights the book’s origin-story approach, noting that every logo comes with its own backstory. Some trace to heraldry, others to local landscapes and traditions, spanning flags, flora, buildings, birds, saints, sinners, and squirrels. He also points out that a few internationally known emblems missed the cut. He credits expert commentary from logo designers Seth McWhorter, Ian Gilley, and Kate Smith-Stroh, and covers how Peper and the Logo Lads, three well-traveled golfers with a decade-long passion for club iconography, reviewed hundreds of candidates against seven criteria: distinctiveness, heritage, quality, timelessness, symbolism, versatility, and backstory.
Fitzsimmons explains that rather than assigning precise numerical ranks, the book groups its 100 logos into tiers of 10, and that it includes an Emergency Nines section for logos notable for charm, character, and eccentricity. He also mentions Brad Faxon’s foreword, and closes with ordering details: $79.99 for the standard edition, $149.99 for a signed collector’s edition in a slipcase, and an Oct. 1 shipping start ahead of the holidays.
